A new digital infrastructure has been established under the name ELTE Thesis Repository to support the archiving and lawful dissemination of theses, as well as student research papers submitted for the Scientific Students' Associations Conference (TDK) and the National Scientific Students' Associations Conference (OTDK).

Theses submitted in digital format at Eötvös Loránd University, along with older, paper-based works digitized through a 2024 cooperation between the University and the National Széchényi Library (OSZK) will be continuously searchable on the platform. The repository is available for use in libraries with the Thesaurus Browser, developed by the University Library and Archives, which also offers users the possibility to search by institution and subject. The new digital service will provide access to more than 50 000 theses in the University Library and Archives and in faculty libraries, in accordance with legislation and faculty regulations.

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club continues the series of screenings and discussions. We welcome university citizens from all faculties of ELTE.

In the first feature film adaptation of Ferenc Erkel's opera, the roles are played by some of the greatest European and world-famous Hungarian opera stars of our time, mostly in original locations. The film's director and Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond found a common denominator for the romantic opera and the medieval atmosphere in 19th century historical painting, from which they drew for the film's visual language. The filmmakers only made the necessary dramaturgical changes to the familiar, classical story. The film won the Tony Curtis Award of the Hungarian Consulate General in Los Angeles at the 2011 Los Angeles Hungarian Film Festival. Directed by Csaba Káel, The Bánk bán becomes a thrilling and captivating story, accompanied by the catchy music of Ferenc Erkel.

Set in 1213, the story, written by József Katona, features Queen Gertrude's Meran compatriots dormancy in the royal castle. The unpeaceful Hungarian nobles are watching the dárido from the sidelines, and under the leadership of King Petur they are plotting. Their anger is only increased by the fact that while the king's viceroy, Bánk bán, who is fighting in the distance, is roaming the country, his wife, the beautiful Melinda, who has been left at court, is being besieged more and more openly by the queen's lecherous brother Otto. Petur secretly recalls Bánko, who, however, accuses the unpeaceful of treason. But Otto's confidant, the knight Biberach, tells Banach that the prince is trying to seduce Melinda. Otto, encouraged by the Queen, prepares to make a decisive attack.

He pursues his lover Melinda in the castle's cloisters and chapel, and she rejects him contemptuously, but is nevertheless in a misunderstood position. Bánk, who has just seen them, is shocked: it seems that his adoring spouse is indeed unfaithful...

The surviving documents, maps, books, and personal papers of Zoltán Magyary (1888–1945), university professor and internationally acclaimed scholar of public administration, and founder of the Hungarian Institute of Public Administration, were preserved and curated by the Department of Administrative Law at the Faculty of Law, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE).

In 2015 and again in 2017, ELTE and the Ludovika University of Public Service (LUPS) entered into a cooperation agreement concerning the digitisation and public release of the entire collection. In December 2023, LUPS transferred the digitised Magyary materials to the University Library and Archives. Among the contents digitised under the agreement, maps and organisational charts have also been uploaded to the ELTE Digital Institutional Repository. As a result, a total of 1,404 items in the Magyary Archive are now searchable and available for research through the EDIT platform. As of 2022, the ELTE ULA Archives has been responsible for managing both the records and the maps.

Seventeen-year-old Emilia Odor's red hair is not the only thing that makes her stand out among the students at the Ilona Zrínyi Institute for Girls. She has only recently arrived from Pest to the strict rural college, but she is already in conflict with its rules, rebelling against its strict order, hypocritical faculty, and fossilised customs, and rallying her classmates to her side, becoming a leader among the girls. That is, until the headmistress announces a competition: one student from each class will be chosen to attend the millennium celebrations in Budapest. The competition soon turns the girls, who had been close until then, against each other, and only Emilia Odor recognises the manipulation behind the intention.

On February 26, 2025, Qulto held its annual professional day at the customary venue, the Metropolitan Ervin Szabó Library. Representing Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Dr. László Nemes, coordinator of the ELTE RRF Digital Learning Material Repository subproject, and Tibor Móring, research support librarian at the ELTE University Library and Archives, delivered well-received presentations that attracted wide professional interest. 

Their talks focused on the digital learning material repository subproject, which aims to archive and enable the reuse of open-access teaching materials produced in various formats. In his presentation, our colleague outlined the concept behind the development of ELTE’s digital learning material repository, as well as the related professional work carried out by the University Library and Archives. He also presented the key findings of a 2024 survey conducted among ELTE instructors.

According to the Rector’s mandate on the registration of the publication activities of Eötvös Loránd University (No. 6/2012. (II.23.), the full-text digital version of scientific publications published with ELTE affiliation must be archived in the university’s repository. The University Library and Archives facilitates the fulfilment of this obligation by archiving Gold Open Access publications.

In preparation for the collection of the full texts, we also make use of data from the Dimensions, OpenAlex, Web of Science and Scopus databases. In the first quarter of 2025, the processing of publications published in 2022 was completed, resulting in 1 072 documents being uploaded to the EDIT-repository. In addition, the 298 articles published in 2024 under the Read & Publish subscription scheme provided by the EISZ have also been uploaded.

The content is available in the ELTE Digital Institutional Repository, where a total of 15 281 scientific publications are now searchable.

The Department of English Language and Literature of the ELTE Berzsenyi Dániel Teacher Training Centre, with the support of the Embassy of Ireland to Hungary, is hosting a day of Irish literature, music, film and cultural dialogue on 24 April. The event will be attended by Ragnar Almqvist, Ambassador of Ireland to Hungary. The event will also take place in the ELTE ULA Savaria Library and Archives from 14:15 in the Pável Ágoston room on the second floor.

In the spring of 2025, a colleague of the ELTE University Library and Archives held four online information sessions on research data management. The aim of these events was to provide researchers, lecturers, and students with a comprehensive overview of the key aspects and best practices of managing, sharing, and archiving research data.

The presentations covered, among other topics, the research data lifecycle, FAIR data management principles, opportunities and benefits of sharing research data, as well as the support and services available at ELTE. The topic generated significant interest, with a total of approximately seventy participants attending the sessions.

The presentations and related materials are available in the ELTE Digital Institutional Repository (EDIT).

The ELTE–NFI University Film Club, run by Eötvös Loránd University in cooperation with the National Film Institute, offers a special, off-site event for university citizens from any faculty of ELTE. The National Film Institute's Film Archive will offer the opportunity to visit the film archive for a screening and discussion.

Participants will also get a first insight into the operation, history and curiosities of the Film Archive and Film Lab, as well as its Library. Then, in the screening room, we will watch the 1940 film Closed Court, directed by Géza Radványi. The screening will be followed by a discussion.

At the centre of the film is a love triangle that develops under the attraction of classical music. Péter Szentgyörgyi (József Timár), a famous pianist, falls in love with a young student, Anna (Mária Tasnády-Fekete). Their love is not consummated, and they meet again only five years later, when Anna is married to Péter's friend Gábor Benedek (Antal Páger). Benedek Gábor is a prominent defence lawyer who is working on a case of jealousy murder. The old affection between Peter and Anna is rekindled, and Gábor himself experiences the feeling of jealousy. Although the decision is a difficult one, she is forced to choose between the two men.

The Closed Court is Géza Radványi's first directorial work, which immediately gained him national recognition. Radványi studied in Vienna, Paris and other Western European centres, from where he brought his knowledge to Hungary in the early 1940s. The film fits in with the melodramas of the decade, but its tone is not nearly as sombre as later films. Its humanist approach anticipates the values of the director's later films, and its elegant style is particularly enjoyable.

Please bring snacks and drinks, there is no buffet on site. You are welcome to join only the screening and discussion part.

Meet at the venue at 9.45 am. Access: buses 22, 22A, 222 from Széll Kálmán Square to the Waterworks stop. From the bus stop, walk down Budakeszi street and you will find a small staircase after the chapel leading up to the building.

Snow White is József Nepp's first feature film, brazenly holding up a mirror to the classic Disney film he considers to be an etalon, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), by mocking the basic motifs of the well-known tale. No-White focuses on the criminal background of the original Grimm's tale, on how the evil stepmother came to the throne and how she ruled, and can thus be understood as a political parable and a poignant social portrait through the absurdity of the royal court and the power mania of the haughty queen.

Nepp's satirical reinterpretation of Snow White drew inspiration from such notable genre parodies of the era as the horror spoof Young Frankenstein (1974), directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder, and the satirical Monthy Python historical film Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975). While the screenplay was written by József Nepp, the dialogue was polished to final form by writer József Romhányi as dramaturg.

The film is a bizarre and humorous work of art, especially for adult audiences. At the time of its release, it was one of the most rejected feature-length animated films in Hungarian animation, but thanks to its dialogue, which became a legend, turned the film into a cult classic in the eyes of posterity.
